This interdisciplinary thematic unit (ITU) will combine math and history to teach students about demographic shifts happening all around them and the difficulties of combining cultures with keeping peaceful relations and understanding of each other. By moving through all of the pages on this website, you will find an understanding of how this unit came to be as well as the specifics of what will be taught in both subjects as well as combined projects and learning.
The service activity learning that the students will complete as a part of this unit will be a public debate in front of the whole school. This debate will ask that the students bring the research they have performed and the understanding of historical implications of cultures coming together. They will debate whether cultural assimilation is the best option, maintaining cultures or staying somewhere in the middle of these two options. By performing a public debate, the students involved in this project will bring a greater awareness to the students and teachers at the school about the advantages and issues to consider as cultures come together.
